One of two endangered great apes on Earth (the other being gorillas), orangutans are the largest arboreal mammals found on the planet today. While the orangutan tends to be synonymous with Borneo, it’s not the only primate inhabiting the rain forests of the world’s third-largest island.

In the first installment of our photo slideshow series, Nature’s Close Up, wildlife photographer and naturalist Ron Leidich shows us some of his top primate images from Borneo, where he and a group of WWF members not only observed orangutans in their natural habitat, but came across monkeys and macaques as well.

Protecting Orphaned Orangutans

Poaching and the pet trade remain major threats. Several hundred Bornean orangutan orphans confiscated by authorities have been entrusted to orphanages in Malaysia and Indonesia. They are in the process of being rehabilitated into the wild.
