I am a resident of kiamba, sarangani, philippines, working with LGU in our municipality. A few years ago, we established (53 hectares) marine protected area primarily to preserved our corals and ensure fish abundance for the community. Ninety percent of our corals is made up of hard corals, specifically the branching and table corals. Like Palau, we have a problem in the crown of thorns infestation, we collected several times but its doubling so fast. Our collection effort is effective only in shallow areas because we have no gears for deep areas. Last January when i guide a diver, i found almost all branching and tables corals were dead and i do believe it was all the work of crown of thorns. I do hope Ron Leidich will also visit our place, teach us and help us save our corals.
