As the year draws to a close, we often pause for reflection: what were the highlights of the past 12 months, what would I do over again if I had the chance, and what can be done differently next year? At WWF, as we review the year's conservation successes, we are inspired by the challenges of the coming year, and also thankful for the progress that's been made in the name of nature.

Sometimes it can seem as if the world's conservation needs are overwhelming - too many priorities, too many calls for help and the frustration that nothing one does will ever be enough. But by focusing our efforts on a short list of the most important places for diversity of life around the world, and improving the practices of institutions changing the face of the earth, I know we are making a difference even in the face of challenging and often adverse circumstances.

William Shakespeare wrote that one touch of nature makes the whole world kin. Nature is what unites as a global community, no matter what the landscape looks like outside our window - and our common desire is to protect and preserve that which is most precious to us. At the closing of the year, I'm thankful for the skills and energies of our extraordinary staff, and the goodwill and courage of our conservation partners. I'm thankful for the opportunities we have to collaborate with local citizens from Georgia to the Galápagos Islands, and the great spirit of creativity and partnership they bring to our work, and I'm thankful that we are able to bring our gifts to conserve these magnificent places and wildlife around the world. Every opportunity means a chance for success - and in conservation that is the greatest gift of all.
