WWF Fiji Expedition Diary

Lara Hansen, senior scientist - climate change
Lara Hansen, senior scientist - climate change, traveled to Fiji in March 2007. With several local and American colleagues and a crew from National Public Radio, Lara and her team visited several coral reefs and mangrove forests to assess the current effects of climate change and look for ways to help coastal ecosystems and communities respond to the growing concerns prompted by global warming.

Join Lara and her team on a journey to one of the world's most beautiful coral reefs. Learn how WWF is studying this environment and its role as an indicator of the effects of climate change.

Sunday, February 25th
Before you start a field project there is much to do. You have to make sure you have your gear, know where you'll be going and share protocols and practices. You also want to get a really good night's sleep. Sleep was not in the cards tonight. There was an awesome thunderstorm. Not only does a thunderstorm on a Pacific island include the normal grandeur of bright lightening, crashing thunder and pelting rain (gallons in this case) but you also get the more proximal danger of crashing coconuts, dropping from trees with what could literally be terminal velocity. We are hoping the rain stops soon so we'll have good visibility for diving tomorrow.
