Here are a few of the ways that Time for Change partners are making change:

At all unnecessary construction sites contributing to urban sprawl: I will use mowed down branches and debris to make interesting outdoor "stages," going out to the site at night (using only moonlight) and dressing tree limbs (from clothes purchased at thrift stores) in clothing (so others can relate to them as living beings); I will then create different themes (for example, a "mock funeral," or graveyard, for trees) at these sites (perhaps with a dressed-up "baby tree" lying in a shallow pit with it's pleading "arms" stretched outwards). I will think of other different visual themes to get my point across as I make these stages even more interesting. The more radical and eye-catching the better! I will put up protest signs at these sites. Then, in the morning, all the traffic that drives buy can see "the tragic theatre" and hopefully be reminded of the destruction of our natural habitat -- even just a simple remindful sign (such as "America the Beautiful?") placed on an ugly construction dump is better than nothing. I want to draw people's attention to how ugly these places really are and what they actually do - how they all contribute to the demise of our wildlife. Then I will call the local paper and tell them to come on out and (hopefully) take a picture and give my "work" some coverage. I want such business people to feel some accountability and shame. This totally non-violent, non-destructive act of resistance will be fun, creative, and most likely is not illegal in most areas (except perhaps for trespassing). I will also boycott all new corporate stores that contribute to unnecessary urban sprawl in my community and encourage others to do the same. I don't want a Wallmart, Target's and Meijers on every corner. I want a park! I want to hear the birds sing.

At home, my husband and I are big on recycling, reusing and reducing. At school, several teachers keep paper, plastic and aluminum recycling baskets in their classrooms all year. The students quickly learn to use them. The sixth grade collected recyclables to turn in for money to help them with sixth grade camp expenses, an idea from a brilliant parent, and a way to help the earth, too. To mark Earth Day in my third grade classroom, we read about and had discussions about how to take care of the earth. Students also planted seeds to grow trees that will hopefully be planted in their own yards. Education of the young and old is the way to make change happen!

I pledge to drive more to create more CO2 (which is not a poison) to help green the planet. Seriously, I plan to speak out about the truth of climate change -- that it occurs naturally as proven by the last two major changes in the last 1000 years -- i.e. the little ice age and the medieval warm period.

My commintment is to teach my students about the world. They need to know the problems and to learn to find solutions to fix the problems. They though about a few simple things that they would promise to do and wrote them down. Many do not have e-mails so I am posting them together. Christine LeBlanc Grade 5 Teacher, Phoenix, NY My plan to help the environment is that I’m going to start cleaning the yard by racking the leaves and picking up any trash. I will not throw trash out the car window like napkins, fast food, tissues, and more. Plus I’m going to plant more trees so that we have a lot of oxygen. I am going to really help the environment by recycling and, putting all or my scrap food in a pile in the backyard so it can turn into soil that’s good for the ground. Also, I’m going to turn off the lights and turn off the TV when I leave a room. That is my plan to help the earth. A. Ramsey My plan to help the Environment is to pick up litter every day after school. I will also plant flowers and trees, around the neighborhood. I will also put up trash cans around the town, so people can throw things away. Instead of throwing things away use them again. For example, eggshells can be used to help make the soil stronger and richer. STOP your parents from throwing Cigarettes butts or packages out the window. When you have a party with balloons tie the balloons to a pole. When the party is done take the balloons down, and deflate the balloons then throw them away. These are the things I'm going to change this year: No more plastic bags. I will carry my own cloth bags or containers Recycle everything possible. Buy things with less packaging. Be aware of water usage and minimize where possible. Drive less and bike more. Pick up trash on my walks and recycle what I find. Unplug appliances that are not in use. Get our air conditioner checked to ensure that it is running efficiently. Cook several meals at one time and freeze for future use. Keep my freezer full. Find a "Green" lawn care provider. ...and I'm sure the more I think about it, the more things I can do to make a difference. :)

I teach science to children ages 5-10years. Our children are making an Earth Day Pledge that they will monitor for one year. *The children choose a small deed that they write on a piece of paper and post in their bedroom. *Each time they complete a small part of their pledge, they give themselves a check on their pledge and write the date. *Some of our most popular pledges are: -Use CFL lights when a light in their home needs replacing. -Save aluminum tabs for Ronald McDonald House -Pick up litter. -Adult pledges include: a promise to use cloth or web shopping bags instead of the plastic bags, to leave grass clippings on their lawns Our school, Picadome Elementary, is working one individual at a time, for a better environment. The locally organized Earth Day events conflicted with other personal commitments. So, my husband and I went on our own to a "green" lot near our community baseball field to pick up trash. In less than 30 minutes, we filled one 10-gallon bag with trash and one with recyclables. It made quite a difference. We felt very good about doing this, and will commit to a trash pickup once a month. We also bought a Camry hybrid and planted ten trees from Arbor Day Foundation. Just imagine what the world could look like if everyone did their part.

We already had 6 compact flourescent light bulbs in our home- We haave added power strips that can be turned off on all TV's and computers- and we now use cloth napkins instead of paper at home- and I've started taking a cloth napkin in my lunch to work (I already took my own water cup and silverware to avoid plastic and styrofoam)>

I look for drought-resistant plants as well as plants that will attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. I am looking into having a bee hive since the bee population is down. I also give clothes and outmoded other things to charity. Sometimes I make toys or other clothes out of clothing that has seen its day in its present incarnation. For older people who have everything, I donate gifts such as adopting an animal through WWF in their name; they always love that idea. And, they don't have to deal with gifts they don't want which will end up in the trash.

I am committed to have my own mango plantation this year. Through this we can inspire people in 2 different ways. If they have enough land for such plantation , they can go for such kind of gardens which will be an extra income for them as well as some people can get some employment in taking care of the gardens and doing some other garden related works . The main purpose of this is to increase the awareness of global warming and preventing it to increase further by planting trees.

I don't have a car and I will continue to walk to reach local places, [going through London parks!]Or take the bus. For longer journeys I'll continue to take coach/train, and look at these for travel to Europe mainland too, rather than Ryanair. I'll change my last hi-wastage light bulb to an eco friendly one, and continue to turn off all lights, stand-bys, etc, when not in use. I'll wear jumpers rather than having central heating on in cold weather, and draw blinds and open windows to create a natural shady breeze rather than use fans/air conditioning. I'll also make use of indoor plants. I'll walk up/down to the 5th floor rather than take the lift. I will look into getting my electricity from a supplier that has an option for obtaining power from hydro/wind/wave power, or other 'natural' power. I hand wash - and use the launderette only for jeans, duvets, etc. I don't flush every time and use a 'hippo' in the cistern to lessen the water loss of the flush. I'm going to be part of a local gardening scheme in the appartments where I live; we're creating a wildlife meadow, pond, and adding bee-hives, composters, and we're using old railway tracks [the wooden blocks] to create raised beds to fill with organic earth and compost and create allotments. We also intend having a greenhouse. This will be worked on and used for veg growing, creating an eco-friendly small space and for hands-on education by leasees and tenants from a culturally diverse area of London based near Westminster. I intend buying local produce as much as possible, especially organic vegs and fruit, and cutting out meat as much as I can. [I'd be a vegan, apart from loving bacon sandwiches!!! This needs to change!] I'm going to grow more sprouted seeds in my kitchen. I will be stricter about using fair-trade, organic produce like chocolate. Much mass-produced chocolate is produced by people in bonded labour, in effect 'slaves'. We ALL can do this, and buy Fair Trade tea, coffee. Enviromentally friendly too! Even supermarkets sell these now. I need to re-do my window-boxes this week, and resist just buying geraniums! I try and grow, even in a very small space, herbs for cooking and for scent and healing, and vegs like multi-coloured chard, scallions, even though they're a little more subtle than scarlet geraniums! I'll save washing-up water for watering as much as poss. I have short showers and longer saunas in the sports centre. Great! I buy mostly second-hand clothes from Oxfam, and will continue to support them and fair-trade suppliers. Much 'affordable' new clothing is produced by people on slave wages using materials produced non-sustainably. I will not buy anything that is GM, or products like some soya products that has been grown in previous rain forest land. I'll continue to recycle - easy here in Westminster. I will cut down my wants and consumption habits, so I don't have so much to recycle/waste. I'll keep up-to-date about the Real state of this planet via sites such as this, and act positively on it. I'll try and stop polluting the world with negative energy and learn from indiginous peoples and others living authentic lives how to 'tread lightly on this earth'.

Our family's commitment started years ago with recycling, but has gotten stronger with every year, especially after our son was born. We recycle everything we possible can, and stuff that our recycling company won't take (glass), we take to a local recycling center. We use canvas bags for shopping everywhere we go, we donate items we cannot use anymore, we use environmentally friendly cleaning products, recycled paper products and we are going to donate to the WWF! We also plant a garden every summer and have our own pesticide free veggies to eat! I do my shopping once a week to cut down on our car use, and until recently, my husband was working out of our home (the last 7 years). We had almost no use for our cars, thankfully. We are teaching our son to turn off the water when brushing his teeth and turn off lights and other electronics when not in use. We are switching over to CFL lights as well. I guess after writing it down it seems like more than I thought, but it is still not enough! And all that stuff has been so easy. We look forward to doing more each year to make this world better and healthier for future generations. Personal contribution CAN make a difference.

Cutting way down on consumption and waste, including energy and water usage. Recycling and donating. Writing letters, and signing petitions and action alerts. Always shop with canvas bags. Drive very little. Feed and water the wild birds. Changed to compact bulbs. And if there's more to do, we'll do it. It's hardly a burden. If fact, it's a good feeling to know that our family is helping to be part of the solution.

Grocery Bags, Local Food and Less Fish My wish for the earth is to compleately do away with grocery bags and food that travels from too far away. Since a while back I have not used grocery bags. I always keep at least two canvas bags with me and if I ever forget them, I do not use bags to carry my groceries, you might say that I "punish" myself for my carelessness. I love fish, but since we have done away with about 80% of the ocean's fish I eat fish about only once every two weeks. As for my groceries, I am fortunate to have a market where I can buy locally grown veggies and fruits. It limmits my choices sometimes but I don't mind. I am resolved to do these three simple, little things because they are easy and they can be done long term.

I carry a long-handled 'grabber' in my car at all times which makes it easy for me to pick up garbage whenever I am out walking. Good idea to keep extra bags in the car so you have a receptacle. With the grabber, I don't have to worry about having somewhere to wash my hands or worry about cutting myself on glass or sharp metal. I can pick up whatever I find and recycle it or throw it away. And it saves my old, tired back a lot of bending! Grabbers unite!

My mom ordered the WWF Kit w/ globe and then I brought it to my Deer Creek Elementary School here in Cedar Park. The staff asked the Leander Independent School District if we could collect on premise during school hours and they said yes. I was so very excited. My mom is sending the money via her check card today. I will donate the WWF bank and the shirt when it comes to my school. My principal Vicki Price said that they would put them in the glass case at the front of the school's foyer. I am hoping that my school will collect every year during Earth Day celebration. This was my very first fundraiser. I am in 4th grade and we had a wonderful time working together as a team. The 4th graders in Mrs. Michelle Estrada-Persellin's class room got permission to make homemade posters and hang them all over the school. We wrote things like, "save the animals" and drew pictures of animals on them. Thank you for sending the globe, poster, and letting us take part in such an important fundraiser. Sincerely, Rene Elan Gabrielle (Gabry) McCracken and Mrs. Michelle Estrada-Persellin's 4th grade class as well as the rest of the students at Deer Creek Elementary. We were actually competing against another fundraiser for a 5th grader in our school named JB who has Leukemia. Kids were giving to both banks. We collected $70.00 all together. Every little bit counts my mom says. Thank you and God bless Children, the animals, and the world.

Shade trellises are now installed on my house to cool the house naturally and limit the necessity of air conditioning. Recycled tires made into rubber mulch will be the base of a child's play area in my garden. Plastic bages are used more than once. Lights are off in unused rooms. I walk rather than drive whenever I can. I recycle household items or donate them so they get more human use and don't go to a dump. I buy organic as much as I can. I reuse plastic containers and glass containers as often as I can. (Colorful plastic tops of mass produced containers for various items make great playthings for children.) See through plastic containers are useful for storage in the kitchen and garage. My garden features rock gardens and herbs which look great and use little or no water. I recycle everything I can find...even my friends bring me newspaper to recycle. At my apartment I turn out the lights when not in use, and open the windows so that the air doesn't have to be on. I take the bus to class. My fiance and I are starting to buy organic, and we are getting bikes soon!

I ask my Kindergarten class at Starlline Elementary if they wanted to collect coins to help endangered animals. They really got excited when they saw the earth bank sent by the WWF. I was afraid that I would have to help meet our goal of a $50.00 donation, but as the Coinstar machine kept adding those coins up, I was pleasantly surprised to see the amount go past the 50 dollar mark. And we only collected for a week! Next year I will have the bank out all year, and will try to plan a time for my students to be present when the donation is made. Thanks WWF for helping me help my students!

My personal commitment for Earthday (and Everyday) is to use my car only for work until the weather gets too cold for me to ride my bike anywheres. We recycle our plastic grocery bags for other tasks or we just bring them back to a store that collects. I wash all of my clothes in cold water except if the garments are really dirty and then they are line/rack dry. We recycle our newsapers and use environment friendly cleaning products sparingly (as we all know they can be a bit pricey. I look at frugal living website and try to stay to the "old ways". I think it's odd that the way I'm living is eccentric or odd when my 70 year old grandma lived that way almost her entire life.

My commitment is to continue to live in the way I am currently living: compact flourescent lightbulbs throughout the house, biodeisel car, recycling, but also reducing our recycling by reusing, bringing our own shopping bags everywhere, for all kinds of shopping, using only eco-safe and natural household and cleaning products, buying fair trade goods, avoiding all petroleum products, no fast food, eating local and organic whenever possible, no household poisons or aerosols, minimal garbage by avoiding unnecessary packaging (ie. products that use that kind of packaging), participating in a carbon offset program, boycotting stores/businesses/products that use non-renewable resources, supporting groups that support wildlife and the environment, always voting green, education others.... AND I pledge to decrease my impact by turning to solar and wind energy for my home!

I already recycle all plastic bags, pieces of glass, plastic containers and bottles, and all tin and aluminum containers that come into our house ... even to the ridicule of my family at times. I also routinely take stacks of magazines, catalogs, and newspapers to the recycling center that I use (we don't even have curbside recycling where I live). We have replaced several light bulbs with the more efficient fluorescent ones, but I am going to buy enough this weekend to replace every bulb inside and outside of our house with them, and to have enough replacement bulbs for a year. I replaced my low voltage landscape lighting with solar lights. I will share and encourage my knowledge and attitude about recycling and conserving wherever possible with my coworkers, friends, and relatives. I am going to start a recycling program at my church this weekend in honor of Earth Day. We don't consume much ourselves, but we allow several groups to meet there every week, and these groups together produce a lot of wasted materials such as bottles, cans, styrofoam cups, etc. I will take the full containers myself to the recycling center periodically. I will buy 3 or 4 cloth bags to be used at the grocery store and other stores instead of plastic bags. We just bought 10 new windows with low-e glass, and will replace others with it as we can afford. Our new front door is energy-star rated for maximum energy efficiency. I believe that we are the stewards of God's beautiful earth and its wondrous and fragile creatures, and that it is the absolute duty of all of us to give them the greatest care and consideration possible. I will strive to convince other people to do just a little something, because if every person becomes more aware, and does just a few small things, it can make an enormous difference. I also am going to continue contributing to several conservation and preservation charities that I believe strongly in, and am now going to contribute $50.00 extra to WWF. I pray that we all will work together to become more aware of our fragile and magnificent environment, and to turn around the damage we have already inflicted. Lastly, I WILL NOT support ANY political candidate who does not have a firm and sound policy about protecting and preserving our environment, and does not strive to change laws to reflect that philosophy. This commitment is written in utmost sincerity in honor of Earth Day, 2007, and far beyond. ~Tish Hudson

Also I have begun to place containers outside to collect rainwater for use in the garden rather than using the running water system. In celebration of Earth Day and to contribute in general, we have joined WWF with a monthly donation pledge. We have also purchased carbon credits to off set our carbon usage for the year. We recycle, buy local and organic, and will be buying 1, possibly 2 Hybrid vehicles in the next few months. We take our pledge seriously, and look forward to "renewing" our vows, so to speak, each subsequent year! Our daughter Sophia is 8 months old and I fear for the world she will inherit. Will she be able to see the array of wild animals I have seen? I doubt it. But there is hope and that is why we contribute. And that is what Earth Day is about, a hope that inspires action!

I motivated my high school Ecology classes to donate by creating a competition between each of the classes. The class that donated the most change received a free pass on the next test. They loved the idea of not having to take the test. My competition got pretty fierce and we raised a total of over $300.00! I was not expecting this at all! I feel like they went above and beyond the call of duty of raising this money for such a good cause.

Trying to get Environmental Organizations and our government to realize that we need to get more serious about supporting a national 55mph speed limit. Besides the obvious carbon emissions unnecessary high speed limits are responsible for, our wasteful habits of this nonrenewable resource are creating havoc in many parts of the world. Oil is about 20 cents a cup for Americans who treat it like it is the cheapest liquid on earth, which it is. Take the pledge to drive no faster than 55mph at http://www.petitiononline.com/drive55/petition.html and reduce your carbon footprint. We have lost the battle to protect the Northern Slope in Alaska from the devastation oil companies will reek. Let's not let it go for next to nothing. Is 55mph to much to ask? Are we really serious about changing? Ecosystems are unraveling this very minute while the interstates are dominated by drivers who insist on exceeding limits that are already indicative of our disregard for our environment. Politicians are not going to make this bold move till the people recognize the need and are willing to make this sacrifice.

Then I will tell all my freinds that this planet is the only one we can live on, and they got to be nice.

My personal commitment to the Earth is all day, every day. I no longer work in a corporate job, drive to work, have a major credit card or have cable. I make my living as an organic farmer. I am teacher to anyone who wants to learn about why organic farming is more about the Earth than healthy humans, although that is a pretty nice side effect. I have a granddaughter and I hope that when I am gone and she is my age, she will remember that her "Gramma" helped to make the world a better place for her to grow up in.

I've changed all of the light bulbs to energy efficient ones and last year I began recycling aluminum cans. This week I have also decided to recycle all paper products, glass, plastics, tin and steel and take them to my local recycling center every two weeks. I also run my thermostat on a higher temperature and a lot of the time I don't even run it at all, unless the tempature outside just gets totally unbearable. Color me GREEN!! :-)

Through my personal web page & a web page I set up for my cats (for animal activism), I am helping to raise awareness by photo editing my cats' pictures into pandas. At our local school, everyone in the grade is decorating paper bags donated by our local ACME in a Earth Day theme. We are then giving them back to the ACME and, when people ask for paper bags after buying stuff from ACME on Earth Day, they'll get our bags. This will help raise awareness for earth day and how to save it! Link to how you can get involved: http://www.earthdaybags.org/

I have been saving up money for a long time. I will have $100 soon. I'm goint to lokk for snakes this week. All that money is going to snake conservationist. I'm going to clean up the woods by my house and plant trees and flowers. It has a lot of garbage in there. I go there all the time. There is a lot of wildlife there. I try to talk to as many people as I can about the small things they can do to help. Changing to energy safe light bulbs, turning off the water while they brush their teeth, recycle, recycle, recycle. I got my husband to agree that our next car will be a hybrid and I'm going to talk to my apartment complex about putting out recycling bins to make it easier for everyone to recycle. I work for a homebuilder (yes...the enemy) that made 14 billion in revenue in 2006...I'm in the process of discussing the mandatory recycling of all paper with the regional president to help give back. Also...I pledged money to WWF and will plant a couple trees on Earth Day. We have to work together to get this done...I want children one day and I want them to have a clean safe planet to live on.

I am a daisy girl scout leader. During our last meeting, I taught the three "r's". We leared how and what can be recycled, what can be put in a compost bin and reused plastic containers to plant sunflowers, which can in turn feed the birds, all in an effort to reduce the amount of garbage put on the curb for the garbage man. Although the girls are only 5 and 6 years old, they took valuable information home to their parents.

I created a rain garden in my front yard. Not having great success, with a lawn. I landscaped the lawn area and directed my rainwater to the area. In my back yard I have a pond, I have rainwater keeping the pond full and also the overflow helps change the water in the pond in heavy rains. In doing this I am keeping the rainwater from flowing down the street and into storm drains nearby which drain into the lagoon and Silver Bay.

My second grade class studies the earth during Earth Week each year. We talk in depth about reusing, recycling and reducing ... concepts which aren't only kind to the earth, but to our wallets and senses as well. On Thursday, we throw all classroom trash onto the ground where we are working. It starts out to be "fun", but gets to the point that it is bothersome for most. Some students start to police others, asking them to use fewer materials, or to share their scraps. For the last hour, we pick up and sort the materials into categories, and then talk about what we've learned. One Friday, we "think" about what is needed before we start a project, and plan it out to share materials, or use the least number of possible. These are great awareness building opportunities.

I'm a current film student in my high school. I've created a 4 minute video, as well as writing a television script to broadcast the importance of taking a stand. Our school has already begun a new recycling program, where we are saving 17 to 20 trees a day! I only hope that once everyone sees this video that they will be inspired to do more and donate toward a cause to clean-up and conserve.

I teach high school environmental science, so I've recruited my 9th graders to lead the whole school in activities that calebrate and educate about Earth Week. They have been researching issues and solutions about which they are passionate and will present their work to the whole school as part of a "Be the change" Assembly presentation, as well as placing posters on various topics all around campus, filling our Earth bank with daily change, having a bake sale, and selling an Earth Day t-shirt, designed and contracted by the students themselves! Another teacher on campus has joined our efforts and recruited some upper classmen to host a plant sale, planting, and recycling contest among the classes and among the dorms. All proceeds will go to support conservation efforts of the World Wildlife Fund. ;)

Changing the rest of my light bulbs over to CFL's. I started this last year as each regular light bulb burned out. Sharing with more people all the benefits of composting. Offsetting my 10,000 miles driven per year again by using carbonfund.org. Fixing that drip in the kitchen faucet to save water. Continuing to hang my laundry outside to dry year round, even in winter. Filling my yard with native plants, water sources and natural food sources for birds and other wildlife. To NEVER buy a dishwasher, dryer or a garbage disposal! To continue to be mostly vegetarian, since the production of meat for the US family dinner contributes one of the highest percentages to global warming. To continue to persuade my 9 nieces and nephews, all of college age, that THEY MUST acknowledge the problem and be a solution by being better environmental citizens and by convincing their parents that Global Warming is a REAL issue and that they all need to CHANGE their ways to save the earth!

I am in charge of the Earth Day plans for my Wal-Mart store. We are going to hand out free packages of seeds. WE will also be displaying seedlings startedin completely biodegradable packages. We are also trying to get a representative to come from the energy wise lightbulbs that we will have on display. Sometimes they hand out free light bulbs. We We will be selling birdhouses that my 4-H group made from wood that would have been burned.(It was cast off wood from a company that manufactures stairs.) The paint was also due to be thrown away. (It was excess paint from my fiancee's house painting business.) My 4-H group also will be showing people how to start plants in peat pots. I will be giving talks about my company's effort in sustainability at our morning meetings. I will also be setting up a binder to show all the ways Wal-Mart is trying to make a contribution to our environment. We already collect 20 oz soda bottles and send to a company (Terracycle) for them to package their products, which are completely recycled, in. They donate 6 cents per bottle to your local charity if the labels are removed, 5 cents if they are not. I will be working on getting the recycling bins back at my location as well.

As part of our environmental team, I am distributing information to our church members on how to live more lightly on the earth. I have put together a one-page sheet "to do" list with information about how to save energy at home and on the road. This includes how to eliminate junk mail, how to "eat" a more sustainable diet, how to cut fossil fuel/ home energy costs. We are giving away reusable bags for shopping to cut lightweight polyethylene bag usage. We are collecing used gym shoes for recycling. We are advocating reduced consumption all times of the year -- including the holidays -- see buynothingchristmas.org -- and we are offering a "Green Confessional" where our church members can buy Carbon Offsets.

I and my husband changed most of our light bulbs to the more environmentally friendly one. Also, our local government is sponsoring a rebate of $100 if you turn in your gas-powered lawn mower and buy an electric, battery, or reel mower. We are going all the way and buying a reel mower to reduce our impact upon the environment when it comes to home gardening. I also am researching what native plants will best fit my re-landscaping of the yard to reduce water use while encouraging local birds and butterflies to "come and stay awhile".

The contest entrants are encouraged to think of a(micro) business that they can start that will be sustainable, eco-friendly and profitable for them and helpful to the village and the environment. I am hoping that by running this small contest it will spur a sense of excitement and willingness to "buy-in" to the idea of environmental conservation. These students have a genuine concern for their future and I try to set an example of how just one person can make a difference by practicing what I preach...recycle both at home and at school (run the paper recycling program at school along with the help of my students...have recycled over 12 tons of paper since inception), conserve energy (turn off lights, unplug computer, turn down thermostat, change all bulbs to floresent), conserve fuel by driving less, never using inorganic fertilizer or insecticides or herbicides, buying eco-friendly products when I can, ect. I also bought a bike and will make an effort to use it instead of driving when possible. We can all make a difference, and we should, for the children of today and tomorrow. I have been taking my time for change globe to school everyday and just asking people to donate any change they have. So far I have raised over 80$ in just 2 weeks of asking around for pennies! My goal is 100$ and if i can't make it off of change then i will donate my own savings to reach my goal! its amazing what people will give for the sake of wildlife if you just ask! That just goes to show how important WWFs work is for the environment and everything living in it! :)

I recycle news papers , magazines, plastics, metal and other recycled items. I encourage others to recycle their throwaways, but that is an uphill struggle. I still encourage them to do this. If I could line dry my clothes and sheets I would!! I do have an energy efficient washer and dryer. I always like the smell of line dried sheets and towel. There is a fresh smell that dryer sheets or other things will never give that to you. Iwish I could do more right now. lionking35

The 4th and 5th graders of Bridges Montessori School are going to celebrate for Earth Day for a whole week. Every child in the school is planting wild flowers. We are also decorating cloth bags to reduce our waste. We encourage everyone to bring a litter free lunch. Of course, we will be collecting spare change for WWF.

I am an elementary school science coach in South Carolina. Our school is hosting a week called "Love the Earth" April 23-27th. All of our kindergarten through fifth graders will be participating in on-line activities to learn about Earth Day, what children can do to make a difference, and sending ecards to relatives encouraging others to help the Earth. During that week we are kicking off our Earth Day project.....collecting 20 ounce plastic bottles to participate in the Earth's Birthday Project to help save turtle habitats.

If it can be done in Los Angeles, California, it can be done anywhere. This is what I've done over the years and continued to add to my list to help La Madre Tierra. 1. Live close to work: I've ridden the bus, walked, carpooled, shared one car, etc. Now, I'm retired and work from home. 2. Live in a neighborhood with amenities: By living in the city, and in an amenity-filled neighborhood, we can walk to our shopping and entertainment needs. If driving is involved, it's a short distance. Gasoline prices have little effect on us. 3) Recycle and Reuse: Our city provides recycling bins. What they don't recyle (ink cartriges, batteries, electronics, hazardous wastes), we store until there is enough to take to a recycling center. 4) Landscaping: By planting shade trees along the side of the house and planting drought-resistant plants, this has helped with lowering room temperature during our hot summer months and reducing the need to water. It saves money as well as water. 5) Drape/Curtain/Blinds/Awnning Control: We keep the house dark in the summer and bright during the winter. 6) Heat and AC: During the winter we bundle-up and heat (if necessary) only the room which we occupy. During the summer after the heat overcomes the house, we use the patiio while the open windows allow evening breezes to cool the house. We don't have central air, and though we have some wall units, we use electric ventilators and hand fans. 7) Composting: We compost as much as we can withing our limited space. 8) Gardening: There is one strip of "grass" along the sidewalk (to be xeriscaped in the near future). Until it is gone, it is left to the rainy season to water, and it push-mowed. Brooms and rakes sweep. The leaves under the trees & shrubs are left and raked as mulch. Lizards, hummingbirds, carpenter bees, honey bees, squirrels, and all sorts of birds keep me company in the garden while I work. 8) Light Bulbs: As many as possible have been changed to the energy saving twirlers. Some sizes just don't fit yet. 9) Paper: In our home office we use recycled copier paper. Shredding newspaper is great for the compost. Pieces off the paper cutter and misused printed paper are made into scrap paper. 9) Washing and Drying: Our goal is to use the diswasher as little as possible, and when using it, we will avoid the longer cycles and open the door for drying. We do our laundry in the evening most of the time, when the city is using less energy. Of course we use eco-friendly laundry and dish soaps. 10) Home Remodeling: We changed most of the windows and doors we could afford. They are Low-E rated to help with light & temperature regulation. Someday we hope to be able to afford wall insulation. In the meantime, I bought caulking and weather stripping for the other windows and doors. 11) Money: We donate what little we can each month to a political/social justice/eco-frindly cause. Sometimes it's just as little a $10.00, but it's something. This time we are collecting coins at my partner's school for the WWF. 12) Gifts: For the end of the school-year, my partner and I adopted a Rhino in the name of the school instead of wasting money and paper on token gifts. The certificate was framed and is on display in the main office. 13) Food: We buy as much organic and locally grown products as possible and available. I, for one, don't eat red meat, and my dog is served organic turkey meat and organic kibble. I try to buy as many non-wrapped foods as possible. This year we are going to make a concerted effort to use our canvas shopping bags. We also support the United Farm Workers. 14) Showers: I am guilty of long showers due to my OCDness, but then again, who showers every day? During the cooler months towel baths should be sufficient for those who have limited contact with grime. Installed in the tub is a removable shower hose for those bidet-like needs. During the summer while hosing the garden, I like to do double duty. 15) Water Bottles: We installed a water purifier. We use our own water bottles whenever possible. We recycle those we had to purchase, but we try not to buy bottled water. 16) Liquids/Chemicals/etc: Our soaps and shampoos have no unfortunate ingredients, but more importantly, they are not animal tested. We are changing to other substances one at a time. We never realized upon how many toxins we made ourselves reliant. White vinegar and baking soda will be investigated and soon implemented. 17) Trash: Whenever I'm at a park, beach, trail, or just a walk in the barrio, I pick up at least one piece of trash. There are a few more that escape me, but if this can be done in Los Angeles, what is your excuse?

I commit to make a difference in the world, especially in rural areas where I see the devasting impact of consumerism and materialism. I have decided to sensitize my community on the impact of improper garbage disposal. Too often I witness children and and having no respect for our source of life, the earth. As an educator by profession I intend to take an active role in guiding first my studenst and my people to better treat our earth. I have also joined the Belize Audubon Society and intend to work hand in hand with the society to make a difference in the country I love, and by extension the world.

Some students and I have started a club called S.A.V.E. which stands for Students Actively Volunteering for the Environment. We have started a recycling system in our school for plastic bottles. We collect nearly 2,000 bottles a week, and that the potential is higher. We do community service projects for nonprofit organizations and local places. This past weekend we planted about 500 saplings in an old cow field to renew a forest as a part of Give a Day for the Bay. This Earth Day we will be going to Alafia State Park for an Earth Day Project. On Sunday (earth Day) we are invited to the Lowry Park Zoo, by the organizers of the cleanup, for an Earth Day celebration.

I will try to consistently use my clothes line instead of the dryer whenever the sun is out. It makes no sense to use a dryer when the sun will dry my clothes in half the time, and save a bundle of energy into the bargain.

I have added a recycle container to my upstairs bathroom to ensure that old shampoo bottles, cardboard containers and the like get recycled rather than thrown away. We have also started collecting all our dryer lint so we can fill our mother in-law's nest box with nesting materials for the birds. I read in a magazine how to teach children about money by having three containers for their allowance. One for Spending, one for Saving and one for Donations. I thought it was a great idea to teach kids to set aside money to support our environment, animals and people in need.

I am excited about Earth Day this year, especially after seeing the Oscar Award being given for the documentary about our fragile planet. As an employee of the Dubuque County Library, I plan to implement 'Earth friendly' stories into our Children's Programing Events, April 16th -21st. There are some excellent children's authors who are making a difference simply by telling OUR EARTH'S STORY. For 2007, I have changed all my cleaning agents to earth-friendly. (Vinegar has always been my primary cleaner). I use canvas grocery bags (I taught myself to remember them by going back out to my car to retrieve them no matter how hurried I seemed to be). I have been a vegetarian for 34 years - I do not promote mass farming. In 2005 I purchased a Scion xA, which averages 33 mpg. I landscape with low-water plants and do not have a lawn. We have changed to low wattage bulbs and recycle as much as possible. I try to purchase products in recyclable containers.

I never really knew about Earth day and how it was so important. I have decided that for Earth day I will ask my boss at work if we can put up a Donation sign to help raise money for the environment. Also to ask people if they can go out and help clean the environment a little. I have explained to my family about Earth day and ask them to help clean up the environment. Cleaning up the beaches helps a lot with are environment because there is always so much trash at the beach.

To sensitize people around my home area to see the importance of trees as each of our people are seriously noticing rainy seasons change now and then. During these last two years there has been a drastic climatic change that has left many of the people sported out in timing crop planting seasons. Most of all i have started planting trees so far i have 80 seedlings and on this day i will plant 100 african indegnous trees for take very long to mature thus causing a long impact on the environment stability. My wish is that if all people/families would feel and develop that idea by planting atleast a given number of long lasting to harvest. And if i would have a way to give support to a project that is developed along with a by-law by local governments for every family to start a timber scheme project i have a strong belief that this would be a successful venture.

Each day I strive to lessen my negative impact on the Earth by consuming less and reusing more. I've switched to wind power for my home and use detergents and products free of petro-chemicals. I have also recently decided to start buying clothing made locally (or vintage) and stop buying clothing made in faraway lands such as China, thereby reducing the eco-impact of shipping and production. I bring my own mug of tea to work and I'm trying to reduce the amount of bottled water I consume. I try to eat locally grown, organic produce as often as possible. I'm amazed at how many actions (no matter how small) I discover daily that can spare the Earth from further damage.
