World Meteorological Organization: 2009 Among Top Ten Warmest Years on Record

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said today that based on January-October data, 2009 is likely to be among the top ten warmest years on record.

WMO said in a press release (dated 8 December 2009) that 2009 to-date is the 5th warmest on record (with data extending back to 1850).  It said North America was the only continent cooler than normal over the January-October period.  "Given the current figures, large parts of southern Asia and central Africa are likely to have the warmest year on record," WMO said.

For details, see 2000–2009, The Warmest Decade, press release from the WMO (8 December 2009).
